Strong digital communication also includes knowing when not to communicate.
Children benefit from learning how to recognize uncomfortable interactions, protect personal information, understand boundaries, and know when a conversation should be brought to a trusted adult.
Digital safety does not have to be taught only through warnings about everything that can go wrong online. It can also be approached as part of developing good communication judgment.
Kids can learn to ask themselves:
Do I know who I am talking to?
Is this information appropriate to share?
Could this message be misunderstood?
Would I be comfortable if a parent or teacher saw what I wrote?
Is this conversation making me uncomfortable?
Do I need help figuring out what to do next?
Helping children develop these habits gives them tools they can use as technology and online platforms continue to change.
Communication Skills Belong Everywhere
At Speech & Smile, we believe communication skills should help children navigate the environments they actually encounter in everyday life.
That includes face-to-face conversations—but it also includes the digital world.
Our online communication classes give kids an opportunity to explore real-life digital communication situations involving areas such as texting, messaging, gaming chats, social media, online conversations, misunderstandings, digital safety, and conversational problem-solving.
Activities may include discussion, role-play, scenarios, games, and practical examples that help learners think about what they could say, how their message may be received, and what they could do when communication does not go as planned.
The goal is not to teach kids one “correct” way to communicate. It is to help them become more thoughtful, confident, flexible communicators who can make informed choices in different situations.
Preparing Kids for the Way the World Communicates
Technology will continue to change.
The platforms kids use five years from now may look very different from the ones they use today.
But the underlying skills will remain important: understanding other people, expressing yourself clearly, thinking about your audience, navigating misunderstandings, establishing boundaries, and knowing when to ask for help.
